Realm Weaving
Modernity and its technologies have distracted us, encouraged a human centric view and caused environmental devastation. Consequently, Americans are currently experiencing the psychological effects of a growing civil divide, a revolving door of Covid-19 variants and an increasing awareness of living in the Anthropocene. We have experienced similar moments in our history after wars and pandemics. This led to a rise in spiritualism, mediums and spirit photography. People sought out these channels of communication because they longed for connection to loved ones and to the possibility of understanding the afterlife in the wake of great destruction and loss.
Through my own experiences, I recognize the need for time in nature and the importance of enchantment. As a parent, of two young women, I want to create opportunities where they come into contact with our environment in ways that help them appreciate the natural world, develop a sense of interconnectedness and open them up to an innerworld that includes hope and possibility for the future. They are the first generation that will suffer the greatest effects of living in the Anthropocene. As a mother, like many caregivers, I continue to work diligently to forge a path, create a safe environment, and provide resources and opportunities for them to grow. This body of work, Realm Weaving, is an extension of this desire and it has been something that I have been able to share with them as I seek and encounter these magical spaces that surround us.
In my work Realm Weaving, I explore society's search for healing in spirituality, mysticism and the occult in times of distress and finding enchantment in everyday life. I consider how we weave the physical, spiritual and other realms to inform our inner world. This is an ongoing project that is created by capturing chance encounters in the everyday, sought out experiences in the natural world and fabricating representations. My hope in creating this work is to offer community and contribution to similar conversations that are happening right now.
